What is a digital footprint?

Your digital footprint is the trail you leave behind online: what you post yourself, and what sites collect about you as you browse, like where you went and what you searched for.

Two kinds

A footprint you leave on purpose, like your posts, photos, comments and accounts.

And a footprint gathered about you without you noticing, like the pages you opened, what you clicked and your rough location.

Why does it matter?

Someone thinking of hiring you may search your name and see what you posted. And ad companies build a picture of your interests from your footprint, then follow you with their ads from site to site.

How do you shrink it?

Think before you post, delete the accounts you no longer use, refuse cookies you don’t need, and sign up with a temporary email on sites you only need once.

It blocks trackers and lets each site see you as a separate device, so your visits aren’t tied together. What you post yourself, though, no browser can erase.
